Sri Vaikunta Ekadasi is the most auspicious Ekadasi of the year!! There are 24 Ekadasi in a year and Sri Vaikunta Ekadasi is considered the most auspicious of all. Ekadasi day being the 11th day in the lunar cycle calender that comes twice a month. It is a very auspicious day dedicated to Lord Sri MahaVishnu. On this auspicious day, Ekadasi Vrata (Fasting) is observed by taking fruits and milk as in take or just water or nothing at all. On this day, Sthothrams, Sthuthis and holy scriptures that glorify Lord Sri MahaVishnu are recited. Devotees who observe fasting on this day and worship Lord Sri MahaVishnu, their sins are removed and they attain Vaikuntam. Few important notes to follow are —we have to follow vegetarian diet —we have should have brushed our teeth and taken shower before chanting this mantra —for women, this mantra should not chanted during the monthly mentural time period. The nama mantra is "NARAYANA". This mantra is suddha -pure- Lord Sri Narayana Mantra and namam. When we take this mantra or chant this mantra, we call Lord Narayana or Lord MahaVishnu in heart, mind and body togather. It is verily Lord Narayana. This mantra will purify the devotee, blesses the devotee with Bhagavan's grace and long, healthy life, prosperity, protection and moksha or mukshi or liberation to go to Sri Parama Padam or Sri Vaikuntam. This mantra can be chanted continuously in mind or audibly throughout the day. When we chant this mantra once "NARAYANA", it takes one second. In one hour, or 60 minutes, this mantra can be chanted 3600 times. In one day, if we chant quietly in our mind or audibly for 5 hours a day, it comes to 18000 times. If we chant the mantra for 12 hours a day, it comes to 43200 times a day. In one year, it comes to 15768000 or 1.57 crores times the mantra. In 20 years, it comes to 315360000 or 31 crores times mantra. In 40 years, it comes to 630720000 or 63 crores times this mantra. This mantra has no rules and regulations to follow. Since the mantras mentioned above is suddha (very pure) nama and mantra of Lord Sri Narayana, following rules given below will keep ourselves very pure to chant the mantra. No gambling, No drinking alcohol, No prostitution , No animal slaugter (killing and eating animals), No falsity, No intoxication, No lust, No envy, No enmity and No bad mind or Buddha or No bad mentality. All the above said misconduct, misbehaviour should be completely avoided and given up as prescribed in Srimad Bhagavatham and other holy scriptures to proceed swiftly in spiritual path and attain our goal of attaining Lord MahaVishnu and to go to Sri Vaikuntam. Makara Sankranthi is celebrated to signify starting of Uttharayana that the period Lord Sri Surya Narayana or God Sun travels in the northern celestial sphere. This auspicious day is the beginning of HIM travelling in the northern celestial sphere. During Uttarayana -next six months,the day light will gradually grow to be longer and we will have sun light for longer hours of the day. January 14th thru July 15th is the six months period of Uttarayana. In South India, this auspicious day is celebrated as great harvest festival called Pongal. He is an incarnation of Lord Shiva who came down to serve Lord Sri Rama for Sri Rama avatharam or incarnation of Lord Sri MahaVishnu as Lord Sri Rama. Please avoid onion and garlic in the dishes. Please offer beetal leaves, beetal nuts, banana, coconut (broken into two halves). Notes: —when you start the parayanam, no one should be standing in front of Srimad Valmiki Ramayanam book. —At the end of each sargam, chant the following slokas -“ aapadhapama hartharam.. and Dharmasya sathya sanshyasya...” as given below: Om AApadaam-pahartaaram Daataarum sarva sampadaam Lokaabhiraamum Shriraamum Bhuyo Bhuyo Namaamyaham Dharmatma satya sandhasya Ramo daasarathir yadi. Paurushe cha apratidwandwam sarainam jahi Raavaneem. —Please recite or chant only slokas and not meaning. Please note that and very important to know that once we start a sargam, we should not stop or take a break in between when you chant the sargam. It has to be chanted fully. If you take a break which chanting a sargam, it has to be chanted from the beginning of the sargam again. —Please do the parayanam in the morning or afternoon or evening. —please recite in medium speed that you can chant slokas clearly and not missing words by rushing through. —after reciting each sargam and the chanting the following slokas -“ aapadhapama hartharam.. and Dharmasya sathya sanshyasya...” you can offer a flower or water or fruit or dry fruits like cashews or badam or dry raisins or kismiss at the end of each sargam. Offer doopam and oil deepam to Sri Rama. If not possible to offer any of these, you can continue to recite next sargam and keep going. Bhagavan is very kind to us. — before the parayanam starts and after the end of parayanam, boiled milk with sugar is offered as naivaidhyam. —after the parayanam, you can offer feast or full meals or Bhojan to Brahmins, reciters and devotees present for the parayanam. — you can take small breaks and no restrictions to follow. —regarding sthothrams to chant, please all of them or as much as you can. Dhyana sloka, Samapana sloka, Vishnu Sahasranamam, Sri Rama Ashtothrathra namavali and Sri Sita Ashtothrathra namavali need to be chanted.
