Onam Festival | Sepetember 7th , 2022-Wednesday(USA, North America, South America, Europe) and September 8th, 2022 - Thursday(India, Asia, MiddleEast, Australia) | Onam Festival Celebrations | Tamil | English |
Dear Devotees, ||Om Namo Narayanaya || Sri Guruvayurappa Sharanam!! We celebrate Onam on Sepetember 7th , 2022-Wednesday(USA, North America, South America) and September 8th, 2022 - Thursday(India, Asia, Europe, MiddleEast, Australia)!! *THE HISTORY OF THIRUVONAM* Vamanadeva and Mahabali The history of both the characters namely Vamanadeva and Mahabali is described by Vyasa deva in Sreemad Bhagavatam (canto-8, chapters 11 – 22) in an elaborate manner A brief description of that is given below. Both devas and asuras are offspring of the same father Kasyapa Muni, but of different mothers, Aditi and Diti respectively. In the war that broke out after the churning of the ocean of milk in which asuras were denied of the nectar the leader of the asuras namely Mahabali, who is the son of Virochana and grandson of bhakta Prahlada was killed along with several others. Sukracharya, the Guru of asuras took special interest on Mahabali who was the best among the asuras, and brought him back to life by his mystic power. At that time Mahabali requested Sukrachrya to make him devendra so that he need not face any more threats from the devas . The post of devendra is meant for devas and Mahabali was an asura. But still Sukracharya took special interest and with a lot of secrecy and care conducted a yajna called Viswajit yajna and it became a success. Mahabali got a chariot attached with two horses out of it and Sukracharya blessed Mahabali and said that wherever he goes with that chariot he will meet with success. Taking advantage of the situation Mahabali straight away dashed against the throne of Purandara who had just assumed the post of devendra. Because of the power of the yajna Purandara (devendra) left his throne and ran away. So Mahabali assumed himself as devendra and expelled all devas from the vicinity. This incident made Aditi the mother of devas very unhappy . She approached her husband Kasyapa muni, who is also the husband of Diti, the mother of asuras. Kasyapa took it light and advised Aditi to observe payo vrata(drinking only milk)for one year and worship Bhagavan. So Aditi did that and as a result got ason Vamanadeva an incarnation from Lord Krishna who only is capable of ousting Mahabali and reinstating Purandara. Vamanadeva , beimg an incarnation could do wonders. But he took advantage of the ego of Mahabali who propagated himself to be a great donor by himself. So Vamanadeva as a dwarf (short person) brahmachari child approached Mahabali and asked whether he can give just three feet of land for doing meditation. Mahabali being very proud of himself told that he will give an isle (nine planets) . But Vamanadeva told that he wanted only three feet of land and nothing more. So Mahabali immediately agreed and told him to measure and occupy the land. At that time Sukracharya reached on the spot and told Mahabali not to give the land and warned him that Vamanadeva is Vishnu himself (all pervading) and has come to favor devas. But Bali did not want to listen to his Guru in order to keep his prestige. So Bali told him that they are traditionally vaishnavites and even if he takes away everything there is nothing to bother and if he is a brahmana boy he will take only very little space. Then he consulted his wife Vindyavali. She also agreed with Mahabali. Thus he permitted Vamanadeva to measure the land and occupy for himself. When Vamanadeva thus got permission, he took his all pervading form and covered the entire Brahmanda (a picture of which is attached). He covered the entire 14 worlds starting from patalam to brahma loka which was the territory under Mahabali. He put his feet at the broad end of the bramanda and his head at the narrow end of brahmanda and lied across stretching the entire 14 worlds. While doing so his toe dashed against its cover and a hole was made on it(shown by blue color near brahmajyothi). Then Vamanadeva told Mahabali: “ You have promised me three feet of land. But the entire world lies in my body and I have space to lie and stretch my two feet only. Where will I put my third foot ? “ Mahabali realized his mistake and understood that he cannot donate three feet of land to Vamanadeva who is an incarnation of the supreme lord Srikrishna, as per Bhagavatam(Canto-1, chapter-3.)So Bali surrendered himself and offered his head to put the third foot Vamanadeva became pleased with his act of surrender and told him to return theposition of devendra back to Purandara who was occupying the chair. As a return to that Vamanadeva gave him three offers One is to make him the next devendra. The next is the occupancy of Sutala loka , which the dream of residents of swarga loka(see the attached figure of brahmanda). The third offer is that Vamanadeva himself will stay as the security personnel for him in Sutala loka so that nobody will disturb him any time. The grandfather of Mahabali, Prahlada also appeared there and they worshipped Vamanadeva and he happily went to Sutala loka which is always aspired by the residents of heaven(sutalam swargibhi prarthyam – Bhagavatam) . The duration of the post of devendra is for a period of 30, 67, 20, 000 years. The dethroning of Mahabali took place before 12, 08, 53, 100 years back. So Mahabali has to wait only for the balance period to become devendra. Now also Mahabali is living happily in Sutala loka. When Lord Krishna was on earth he accepted the invitation of Ugrasena and participated in Aswamedha yajna . But he never visited Kerala and even India.(Garga Samhita chapter-10) THIRUVONAM All these incidents took place outside the planet earth.(see the picture of brahmanda). Those incidents occurred in the beginning of the present Manwanthara1. After a period of 27 mahayugas2 the next incarnation of Bhagavan appeared on earth. During this period a lot of human beings took birth on earth and earth got dominated by demons in the guise of kshatrias. They were having arms and were very powerful .They started looting the Brahmins who were totally helpless. As per Bhagavatam(Canto-1, chapter-3) this is the 16th incarnation of Bhagavan(the 15th being Vamanadeva, and the 17th being Vyasadeva). This incarnation is Parasurama. He tolerated the Khatrias a lot in the beginning. But became ferocious when his father Jamadagni muni was also killed for no reason by the king Karthaveerarjuna. Parasurama, even though a Brahmin by himself took an axe and started attacking the Kshatrias one by one. He spared those who surrendered unto him, but killedthe demonic . This he did 21 times round the earth and made it totally either free of kshatrias or free of their atrocities. Then he turned towards the brahmanas with a helping hand. He asked Varuna deva , the deity in charge of the ocean to spare him some free land and with his permission threw his axe by his divine power from Gokarnam in the present Karnataka and made it to fall near Kanyakumari . By this act he made to come up a long tract of land, which is now known as Kerala, from the ocean. Parasurama then donated this tract of land exclusively to Brahmins so that they can live comfortably without the fear of Kshatrias. For the sake of convenience he divided Kerala to 64 villages and he himself took the responsibility of ruling the state. His headquarters was TRIKKARIYOOR, near Kothamangalam of the present day Ernakulam also known as Cochin in Kerala. Parasurama being one of the incarnations was a man of very great spiritual power. He could provide a sumptuous food to crores of people just within no time. A detailed description of this is given even by Narada muni in Garga Samhita, composed by Garga muni wherein he describes that when several crores of Yadavas along with innumerable animals during the mission of conquering the entire universe approached him he created huge hills of very nice food items and even after their eating there was no considerable reduction in size. Parasurama being a Brahmin by himself loved his subjects very well,as all of them were only Brahmins. He did not entertain any Kshatria in his territory, .It was in fact unique in itself where Brahmins were ruled by a Brahmin, instead of the usual system of Brahmin ruled by Kshatrias. In fact all the Keralites were one in all aspects and they were extremely satisfied under the ruler ship of Parsurama. Vyasa muni recorded the incident as follows in Mahabharata and Padmapurana: It was tretayuga throughout the world. But sathyayuga came back in Kerala alone against the normal sequence of yugas. In satyayuga everything will be perfect. Like this Prasurama ruled Kerala lakhs of years. After that when everything was totally peaceful Parasurama decided to go for meditation to get moksha. When his subjects came to know about his departure all of them assembled and pleaded him not to go. They were remembering the previous atrocities of the Kshatriarulers who slaughtered the Brahmins mercilessly from their ancestors. *Then Parasurama consoled them and gave them a secret mantra. He called all of them who were spread in 64 villages .Parasurama told: I am giving you a secret mantra.* If you find any problem you can call me any time. But there in one condition that the mantra has to chanted in the traditional vedic way in front of the vedic fire in front of which all the representatives from each of the 64 villages should sit and chant. Even if one representative is missing I will not come. If you follow this properly I will come and help you anytime. By giving such an assurance Parasurama departed for Sahyadri to do meditation. Several thousands of years have passed and nobody dared to trouble the Keralites. In course of time the all the 64 villages got converted to 64 illams, by which it was known. During BC 150 – 100 they have decided to conduct a year long Rudrabhisheka at the Siva temple of Trikkariyoor which was the place where Parasurama resided when he was ruling Kerala. So the organizers took a lot of pain and spread their invitation to all the 64 illams. By sheer coincidence and also finding pleasure in meting again after a long period all of them gathered at the temple, were all the representatives from 64 illams were present. So they jointly conducted the abhishekam luxuriously and happily. Towards the end of the program some of them got a novel idea. It is very rare that all the representatives from the 64 illams assemble together. Since it has happened it is quite possible to make Parasurama to appear before them as he had promised long back that he will appear if all of them join and recite his mantra. Everybody immediately agreed to the proposal and told: If he comes we can see him .Otherwise, if he does not come there is nothing to lose. So they arranged the sacrificial fire and all the required items for the sacrifice. They sat together and conducted the yajna as directed by Parasurama. When yajna was going on, the meditation of Parasurama broke and he remembered his promise. When the yajna was about to finish, he appeared from the sky at the arena of the yajna. They were all astonished to see him personally. He was quite unhappy because his meditation was broken. In that unhappy mood he asked them: “Why did you call me?” The Brahmins were perplexed by his question. They told him:” It was only to see whether the mantra given by Bhagavan (you) will work or not”. By this answer he became very furious and gave the two curses. One is that: Keralites will never have unanimity of opinion. (Only because everybody agreed with each other the sacrifice was conducted and he was forced to come to keep his promise) The second curse was that they will be devoid of dharma (religiosity). This is because they gathered there for sake of dharma and he was humiliated for that unnecessarily. On hearing the second curse the elderly brahmins felt very sorry. They thought that the very purpose of human life for moksha and dharma is the only way to achieve that. Sreerama received that and installed that at TRIKKAKARA(near Edappally in Ernakulam) and started the worship of Vamandeva. It happened on the Uthradam star in Bhadra month. The festival of onam was being celebrated on thiruvonam(the next day of Uthradam) star in the same month. So the Vamana jayanthi(the installation day of Trikkakara temple got celebrated along Onam on the previous day. But slowly celebration of Vamana jayanti became less popular and people started ignoring the temple. Later on (800 years back) when king Kulashekara assumed power as the king he renovated the temple and clubbed onam with Vamana jayanti and made it a four day celeberation. In order to make political mileage from the ignorance of the lower class of the society some of political people who assumed power misinterpreted the whole incident and propagated the message that Mahabali ruled Kerala nicely and just because he belonged to the asura community he was kicked down by Vishnu to the hellish planetary system of Patala koka and they encouraged all low class habits like intoxication and meat eating also indirectly on that day for getting support of such people. Government also gets more than 100 crores of rupees as revenue collection for a single day ,from liquor alone, which is more than anything else, by cheating the public. They pleaded him and told to give some relaxationin the curse (sapa moksham)for the second curse. Then Parasurama told: I am not the person who establishes dharma. It is done by only Lord Krishna( He says in Geetha chapter-4 that to establish dharma he takes incarnation). Parasurama continued: “ If you please Lord Krishna properly, dharma will not be lost. Then they asked: “How to please Krishna in our present circumstance? “ Then Parasurama told:” He can be pleased by simple offerings, provided it is with love and devotion (bhakthi). You worship him with flowers for one month of flowery season and offer him nice food when your harvest is over. During that time the sixth month of Sanskrit calendar namely Bhadra is the flowery season. It comes very close to Chingam of the present Malayalam calendar with a difference of only one week. Again by Thiruvonam star (one of the 27 stars as per moon calendar) harvest will be finished. So Parasurama advised them to worship Krishna with flowers throughout the month of Bhadra and offer him nice vegetarian food prepared with love and devotion on the Thiruvonam day. Parasurama told them that in order to make his words true Lord Krishna will visit all the houses following his instruction and wherever there is Krishna dharma will prevail. He told them very clearly that they should follow his instructions at any cost( as the saying goes Malayalam kanam vittum onam unnanam,). Otherwise they will be devoid of dharma and ultimately get ruined and reach hell So all the Keralites started celebrating onam without any cast or creed and as per the instruction of Parasurama they celebrated it individually in their respective homes and there were no combined gatherings as earlier. But the curse of Parasurama did not invain. As per his words the 64 illams if joined together can again make him to come again. So his curse worked in the diminution of the number of illams itself. It happened like this: After the demise of Lord Jesus in AD 45 at his 78thyear at Kashmir St Thomas preserved his body in the church named Rouzabal in Khanyar Street in Kashmir and started his journey towards south. After a halt at Goa,he reached a place near to Guruvayoor(presently known as Chavakkad) where he found that five illams have joined to conduct Siva tharpanam (offering water to Lord Siva in large scale).Thomas was a person who leant (like Jesus) lots of mysticism from the Kashmir pundits. Jesus used this knowledge in a big way. Thomas also thought of using his mystic learning. He asked them: “what are you doing?”. They answered: “We are offering water to God.” Then he told: “But God is not accepting your water. See it is falling down. If I give water to God it will be accepted“.Then he made water to stand in the sky by his mystic power. They were surprisedand accepted him as their master and became Christians.. All others in neighborhood really cursed them for this foolish activity and the place then became known as sapakkad( a land of curse). In course of time the place became known as CHAVAKKAD. Thus the number of illams became 59 and thus lost the chance of calling Parasurama again . Later during the invasion of Muslim rulers several others accepted Islam and the number got reduced to 18.Thus they became totally incapable of testing Parasurama of his promise. Celebration of onam in the present day After the atrocities of the Kshatria kings were over, there arose the problems from Ravana. He was an asura with immense potentials. After conquering the earth he encroached devaloka. There he first snatched the aeroplane of Vysravana the treasurer of heaven. So the next powerful incarnation LordSreerama appeared(from Krishna) on earth and killed him to get rid of his curse of Sanakadi muni and take birth again as Sisupala during the time when Krishna was on earth. Then Rama made Vibheeshana as the king (of Sreelanka) . Once when Rama went to visit him later, Agnideva from devaloka came there and gave Rama a deity of Vamanadeva and told Rama to install it in the land of Parasurama(Kerala). Onam Festival Onam is one of the most popular festivals of Kerala and the official holiday of the state. This holiday lasts for 10 days and celebrated between August and September to mark the end of the monsoon and to welcome the harvest season. The festival also celebrates the homecoming of King Mahabali, the mythical ruler of ancient Kerala who is believed to be the 5th avatar of the god Vishnu. During the holiday, major celebrations take place across 30 streets in Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala. Both Hindu and non-Hindu communities participate in the Onam celebrations as it is considered to be more of a cultural festival than a religious one. During these 10 days, there are processions, rituals, and performances being held all over the state. One main highlights of the festival is the pookkalam which is an intricate design made from flowers that is placed on the ground in front of homes to welcome King Mahabali. During the festival, locals organize colorful parades that showcase elements of Keralan culture through detailed floats and statues. Other holiday traditions include donating to charity, buying new clothes and jewelry, exchanging gifts, visiting relatives, and spending time with family during Onam feasts. Men and women also wear traditional clothes including Keralan saris and Mundus on this day. The main food eaten during the celebration is the Onam Sadhya, a nine-course meal that traditionally includes several vegetarian dishes served on banana leaf. How is Onam Festival Celebrated? Onam is celebrated in many ways over its 10 days of festivities including with prayers, cultural programs, boat races, dance performances, and the creation of floral designs called pookkalam. Families often participate in activities together and perform specific rituals. Here are the main festival traditions for each day of Onam: Day 1 -Atham On Atham, Keralites will take an early bath, perform prayers, and begin creating their pookkalam or floral decorations placed on the ground in front of homes to welcome the king. Men gather the flowers and the women will use them to make the designs. On this day, the pookkalam is often small in size and known as an Athapoo. The design is be very simple on the first day and only yellow flowers can be used. The size will keep increasing and the design will become more complex each day until the end of the festival. The Tripunithura Athachamayam Festival is also held on this day in Tripunithura which is a historic area of Kochi. This celebration includes a street parade that showcases various traditional Keralan art forms such as music, dance, carnival floats, and decorated elephants. The parade floats traditionally feature scenes from Hindu epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The procession path is normally from Tripunithura to the Vamanamoorthy Temple in Thrikkakara. When the parade passes the temple, the festivities stop and everyone pauses to offer a prayer. Families typically start the creation of their pookkalam designs on the first day by making simple shapes with flower petals on the floor in front of their homes. The design will be added to each day of the festival until it becomes an intricate and beautiful piece of art. pookkalam The design will be added to each day of the festival until it becomes an intricate and beautiful piece of art. Day 2 – Chithira On the second day, two more layers of orange and yellow flowers are added to the pookkalam. People will also clean their houses and visit temples.
