The story of Govardhana Puja and Govindha Pattabhishekam given as follows: When Lord Sri Krishna was in Vrndhavan as a small boy, this leela happened. Every year, the people of Vrndhavan would give many offerings to Indra to appease Him. He would bless them with proper rain. Thus, they lived prosperously. Once, Lord Krishna, who was then a little boy of 7 years old, asked his father Nanda, the purpose of making such offerings. Lord Sri Krishna advised them to stop making the offerings and instead to worship Govardhana Hill and Worship the cows. Nanda and people of Vrndhavan seconded with Krishna and stopped making the customary offerings and worshipped Govardhana Hill and Cows. Lord Indra came to know about this and got angry and sent out the region with a torrential downpour, floods, and thunderstorms. Indra's fury resulted in the loss of property and livestock. People became homeless. Krishna lifted the gigantic Govardhan hill on his left hand, little finger (Kanishtha) and provided shelter to people, their belongings and cows and other living beings. Lord Sri Krishna lifted the hill for 7 days until Lord Indra realized the glory of Lord Sri Krishna. On eighth day, He conceded His defeat. He bowed down to the little boy Lord Sri Krishna who was verily Lord Sri Vishnu, the protector of the universe. Lord Sri Krishna preached Him about bhakthi. He along with the celestial cow, did crowning of Lord Sri Krishna and named Lord Sri Krishna as Govinda (protector of cows). This ceremony is celebrated as Gopashtami or Govinda Pattabhishekam on Kartika Montha during Shukla Paksha. Devotees worship cows and Govardhana Hill.
